Resumo | This work presents the observations of the optical counterpart of a downward-directed terrestrial gamma ray flashes at the Telescope Array (TA) detector. The Telescope Array detector is located in the southwestern desert of the State of Utah. The combination of size and elevation makes it a unique tool that allows us to study thunderstorms. Currently it is the largest ultra-high energy cosmic ray experiment in the Northern Hemisphere. The surface detector array part of the TA experiment, used in these observations, is composed of 507 scintillator detectors on a 1.2 km square grid covering a 700-kilometer square in area, 1400 m above sea level. Previous downward-directed Terrestrial Gamma-ray Flashes (TGFs) observations, using the 700 km2 Telescope Array Surface Detector (TASD), established that observed lightning-correlated energetic particles are downward-directed gamma-ray showers. Moreover, these downward-directed gamma-ray showers were found to be correlated with the early leader and the initial burst pulse stage of cloud-to-ground lightning. In this work, we use the TASD detector, together with a high-speed video camera, in conjunction with the suite of lightning instruments at the TASD site, to report on the optical emission of downward-directed terrestrial gamma ray flashes. The suite of gamma and lightning instruments, timing resolution, and source proximity offers us an unprecedented look at the TGF phenomena. The optical emission observations, together with in-progress efforts, should allow us to better understand which runaway electron production model is responsible for gamma-ray production in the atmosphere. Results from this study allow us to further the understanding of the initiation and propagation mechanism of terrestrial gamma ray flashes. In addition will allow us to further our ability to compare the most recent satellite optical emissions counterpart of upward-directed TGFs to that of downward-directed TGFs. |
